RNY, DS, and LAP BAND WARS....................
I'm probably going to get a "reaming" for this post, but I don't care...I'll bend over now....
I have been so busy lately, and have been so tired, I hardly ever come the the board anymore. But, I came on this morning because it's my day off, and I just wanted to read some posts...I scroll down and there it is...........a post from a DSer!
I've been on this board for about 3 years now, and I love it. I have always appreciated the fact that I can, for the most part, come for encouragement. There have been a few times when I have run into what I call "Board Reamers," and I've gotten a bit offended with some comments they have made, and I've told them so...by way of a PM. But, this constant war between which surgery is right for who....it is so ridiculous.
I remember awhile back, a gal from Manteca posted and basically said that her dr told her that the reason that she gained her weight back is because her RNY failed her, and that she needed to have the one of the other surgeries to ensure her success...I'm sorry but bull...t! I sat with her a few times and watched what that gal ate...she came to my "last supper" and literally had bbq sauce all over her face as she ate a rack of frickin ribs! My family asked me when she was going to have her surgery, and they were blown away when I told them that she was a year post op.....she opted to not make the choices necessary to ensure her success, and ultimately, she is to blame for her weight gain, as we all are. Her post caused such a war that some disgusting things were said to people, and if I remember right, one person got kicked off the board for it, and another, who the mean things were said to, we don't hear from much anymore....sad. It's wrong, plain and simple.
No matter what surgery we choose, it has to be a decision to change our lives. The battle is still there, and it always will be. By having the surgery we are just given a "Golden window of opportunity" to really get it together. After that time is gone, it's up to us as to whether or not we gain it back. In terms of health, for those of us who choose to go the RNY route and take vitamins for the rest of our lives.....big deal! The vitamins help keep us healthy, and if you're faithfully taking them 99% of the time your labs come out great. Sometimes they're are issues...........AS WITH ANY SURGERY!!!!
If you are a RNYer and you are happy with your results, but feel the need to go to the DS board and tell them that this is the surgery they should have gotten, or should get....stay away from that board! Same with the DSers and the Lap Banders. If you wanna browse boards and offer insights in terms of health and eating, exercising, recipes, and what works best for you, then by all means, cross over to the other boards and offer encouragement.
I have a confession to make............I have a Lap Band friend....and we really like each other, and have never, ever once argued about our surgeries.......now that is what I call a "WOW" moment.
Maybe in addition to the psych exam that we all have to take before getting our surgeries, they should include a "weight loss surgery sensitivity" class, where a bunch of varied wls patients all sit in a room, and have a big brawl and ha**** all out.
Do your research, have your surgery, then make it work.......and if you feel the need to tell everyone else that they are wrong for having the surgery that you chose not to have....shut the F___ up!

Janel,
It's all about choice! What I love about the CALI board is we are accepting of all WLS. I saw the DS post and avoided it, I read what I am interested in, we have people that come on every once in awhile stirring the pot if you will I try to ignore it.
The beauty yet again of this board is the acceptance and everyone does their own research and makes their own choice. We are still on a journey together no matter what the surgery. WE MUST DO THE WORK! I often think of Janine so far out from surgery losing another 60 pounds or was it 80 either weigh it means this is your choice....what do you choose failure or success. Hey, they are right it's all about in's and out's how much we put in our mouth and how much movement/exercise we partake in.
Thanks for the post girl. Thanks for the reminder of what support and encouragement are and sensitivity!

Well said, Janel!
It's all about choices and what we decide to do with the decision and choices we make for ourselves. I remember over a year ago the DSers came out full-force on the main board which truly turned me off, so I jumped over to the CA board. I'm here for positive support and the sharing of ideas. My nutritionist had the DS and told me she regrets it and said she would have gone for the RNY if she were more informed. Once again choices.

Janel,
My fellow Concordian, you said it perfectly and with respect. We all have to do our own research and make the decisions and then work the tool. Each one has it's ups and downs and so be it.
I love our Cali board because of acceptance, kindness and encouragement of ALL.
Thanks for taking time to post and for your honesty. You rock!
Hugs,
Barb

And yet the surgery wars end up bringing information about the DS to people who need and appreciate it -- so they will continue. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/board_id,5357/cat_id,49 57/topic_id,3484967/a,messageboard/action,replies/#27246458
And how nice of you to post about someone with all but her name, which points clearly to her, and makes out like she has no table manners and that somehow, this is related to the failure of her RNY and her quest for a DS revision. Nice -- aren't you a class act.
I'm guessing if you were all so happy with your surgeries, you wouldn't be so sensitive and testy about people posting about the benefits of the DS.
